UNIONVILLE, MD., Jan. 31, - A large threshing engine in use on the farm of WM. LONG, about two miles and a half southeast of this place, exploded this morning with terrible effect, the engine itself being blown into atoms, the barn ignited and burned to the ground, the engineer, JOHN IZER, aged about 25 years, killed and a man named DUDLEY seriously scalded. The men were at work at the time threshing wheat. The noise of the explosion was heard for a great distance and attracted the attention of everybody in the neighborhood. The straw in the barn was ignited from the engine fire and the flames soon swept through the entire building, entailing a loss of about $2,000. The barn contained about 300 bushels of wheat, a quantity of oats, harness, feed, wagons, &c. Mr. IZER, the engineer, who was killed, resided in Unionville with his wife and was a highly respected citizen. The accident has aroused intense excitement in this neighborhood.

He was the son of Jeremiah and Mary Ann West Izer; married Virginia Fowler March 19, 1884 in Carroll County Maryland. He waas my 2nd Great-Granduncle.
