Daniel was born January 6, 1761 (baptized April 4, 1762) at Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was the son of Hezekiah (bp. 1725) and Millicent (Seymour) Wadsworth (b. 1728). Daniel had at least three brothers: Israel (b. 1759, bp. 1760), Hezekiah (b. 1759), and Ezekiel (1763-1766).

On July 1, 1780, Daniel enlisted as a Private for six months in Colonel Samuel Wyllys's Third Connecticut Regiment of the "Continental Line." In 1780, the 3rd Connecticut Regiment was with the main army on the Hudson River in New York State. The Regiment wintered, 1780-1781, at Camp "Connecticut Village" above the Robinson House, Hudson River.

By September 1791, Daniel had moved from Connecticut and taken up residence in South Hero, Chittenden (now Grand Isle) County, Vermont. He took the "Freeman's Oath" in the Town of South Hero, September 6, 1791. He was not enumerated in the 1790 US Census taken in Vermont.

Daniel married, January 12, 1792, Azuba Pearl (1764-1840) by whom he had six children (2 sons and 4 daughters): Stephen P. (1792-1882), Lucretia (1796-1797), Elizabeth (1798-1859), Horace (1800-1864), and Millicent (1802-1888).
