He is best known as the elderly Juror #9 (McArdle) in the 1957 film "12 Angry Men." Primarily a stage player, Sweeney settled into movies and television towards the end of his long career. His other notable appearances include the films "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) and "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" (1956), and on the TV shows "Dr. Kildare," "The Defenders," "Ben Casey," and "Playhouse 90."
