Claude Goudimel
Birth: c. 1514
Death: Aug. 28, 1572

Composer. His many settings of the Psalms became popular throughout Protestant Europe and are still heard today. Little is known of Goudimel's early life. He was born in Bensacon, France, though his birthdate is only approximate. His earliest compositions, a collection of secular songs, appeared in 1549, while he was a student at the University of Paris. From 1551 to 1555 he was a proofreader and then partner at the music publishing firm of Nicolas Du Chemin, which brought out a good deal of his music. These include five Catholic Masses, three Magnificats, some 70 songs and eight books of Latin Psalms set in motet style. Around 1557 Goudimel converted to Protestantism and moved to the Huguenot center of Metz, where he did his most important work. His two complete settings of the Genevan Psalter (1564, 1568), intended for domestic rather than church use, are simple yet varied in their arrangements; several anticipate modern hymn-setting, with the top voice (the melody) dominant. When an anti-Protestant regime was installed at Metz in 1567 Goudimel sought refuge in his hometown and then in Lyon, but he could not escape the religious bigotry that was then sweeping France. On August 28, 1572, the slaughter of the Huguenots that had begun in Paris on Saint Bartholomew's Day reached Lyon and decimated its Protestant population. Goudimel was among those murdered, and his body was thrown into the Rhone. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
