His first job in oil was as a roughneck in the Burkburnett oil field. He went to Trinity University, and from 1919 to 1921 he studied geology at the University of Texas. In 1931 he and Jack Frost founded Byrd-Frost, and operate hundreds of wells in East Texas that were soon producing 4,000 barrels of oil a day. In 1944 he founded Byrd Oil Corporation and B-H Drilling Corporation, later sold to Mobil. In 1952, he organized the Three States Natural Gas Company, which was purchased by Delhi-Taylor Oil Corporation in 1961. In September 1941 he formed the Civil Air Patrol with Gill Robb Wilson. He also invested in Temco Aircraft and, in 1961, helped organize Ling-Temco-Vought, a conglomerate that reflected his continual interest in the aviation industry. He owned the Texas School Book Depository building since the 1930's and at the time of the JFK assassination; he had the window from which the alledged assassin shot at JFK removed and mounted on the wall of his home.
