He was best known for his controversial comic strip "Kudzu", which was syndicated in newspapers worldwide. He also drew single-panel cartoons and wrote columns for "Time", "Newsweek", the "New York Times", and many other publications. In 1988 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartoons and received the National Headliners Award. As an author he published two novels, "The Bridge" (2001) and "Magic Time" (2006). He was inducted into the University of North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame in 2002 and to date is the only cartoonist ever awarded a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University.
