She was united in marriage to Ralph Leroy Bierly, Jr. To this union, 9 known children were born: Martha Ann, Mary Jane, Ralph Leroy, III, Sue Carolyn, Gail Kay, Jill Marie, Brenda Jo, Benny Lee, and Paula LeAnne Bierly.
Velma graduated from (what is now known as) Franklin Monroe in Darke County, Ohio.
She was an excellent cook and baker. Many people commented that she should have a restaurant.
In her later years, Velma was most content when holding a baby.
