...from the Virginian-Pilot and the Norfolk Landmark, Sunday edition newspaper, June 23, 1935:
"Mrs. Mary Elsie Billups, age 44, wife of James Rosser Billups, of Great Bridge, Norfolk County, died yesterday morning at 11 o'clock after a brief illness. Mrs. Billups was a native of St. Bride's, a daughter of the late Thaddeus and Fannie Butt Banks, of North Carolina, and had made her home here all her life.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Harry D. Salyer, of San Francisco, Cal.; two daughters, Miss Margaret D. Salyer of New York, and Elsie Lee Billups, of Great Bridge; two brothers, Cecil Banks of Norfolk, and Roy Banks of San Francisco; one sister, Mrs. R. H. Daughtry, San Francisco, and a half-sister, Mrs. Lina Bateman, of Virginia Beach.
The body was removed to the Graham Funeral Home, Jackson and Jefferson Streets, South Norfolk, where funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Burial will be in Berea Cemetery."
Berea Cemetery was owned by a church, however, all of their records were lost in a fire. The main cemetery is now called Chesapeake Memorial Cemetery owned by Hollomon-Brown funeral home, 524 Cedar Rd, Chesapeake, Va, 23322.
