Professional Baseball Player. While playing for the Brooklyn Wonders, Boston Reds and Brooklyn Bridegrooms in the early 1890s, he intimidated opponents with his ready fists and his potent blue-tipped bat. He hit a career-high .355, the first of four consecutive .300 seasons. He was the Giants manager from 1896-1898. He tied with Ed Delahanty for the home run crown in 1896, with both hitting 13. He was also partly responsible for the term "Texas Leaguer," a shallow pop fly that falls for a hit when he and fellow Texas League alumnus Arthur Sunday debuted in Toledo with back-to-back bloopers. In addition, he is the only player in modern baseball history (60-foot pitching distance) to hit four triples in a game. He did that on May 18, 1897, in Pittsburgh, with his team winning 11 to 5.
