OGDEN CIVIC WORKER,
EDUCATOR DIES AT 78.
Mrs. Ellen Edvenia Jeppson Malan, Prominent educator and civic worker, died Friday, Nov, 18, 1977, at her home at 3034 Jackson following an extended illness. She was 78.
Mrs. Malan established Ogden's first summer playground that became the foundation for the current comprehensive city recreation program.
She represented Utah at six national and international recreation conventions and in 1955 received the state award for outstanding service in recreation.
Mrs. Malan was the widow of Lawrence M Malan, former Weber County Clerk and prominent political and church leader during the 1930's and 1940's.
She was born Dec. 25, 1898, in Brigham City, a daughter of Jeppa Lorenzo and Ellen Baird Jeppson.
She married Mr. Malan on Dec 25, 1937 in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. He died April 30, 1968.
Mrs. Malan attended Brigham City Schools, the University of Utah, Utah State University and the University of California.
She taught for 42 years in Corinne, Brigham City and the Ogden School District. She received the Ogden Rotoary Club Distinguished Teacher award in 1960. She retired from teaching in 1962 and was president of the Retired Teachers Association in 1964.
She established the first summer playground at Lorrin Farr and Liberty parks in 1929. She directed the first pageant for the Ogden Pioneer Days and was one of the originators of the former "Children's Parade".
Mrs. Malan served as president of the LDS Mount Ogden Stake YWMIA, stake relief society president, directed the LDS Ogden Region Indian Placement Program and was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
Surviving are two sons and two stepdaughters, Dr. Lee J Malan, Ogden; Dr. Max J. Malan, North Ogden; Mrs. Grant(Maxine) Waldron and Mrs. Bert(Beverly) Strand, both of Ogden; 37 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Ogden 53rd Ward Chapel, 976 33rd, with Bishop David H Geddes officiating. Friends may call at Myers Mortuary in Ogden Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday at the ward chpel one hour prior to services.
Burial will be in the Ogden City Cemetery.
