British and US Army veteran. He joined the British Army at age 18 and fought in several French and Indian War battles in Canada. He attained the rank of Captain of Volunteers and was wounded. While recuperating in Nova Scotia he met and married Mary Elizabeth Wheeler. At the start of the Revolution in 1775 he joined the Continental Army. After the war he accumulated wealth while trading with Native Americans in Worcester County, Massachusetts. In 1800 he moved to Stockbridge, where he died at the home of his son William.
