Hamilton enlisted as a private, but was later promoted to corporal with the 40th Ga. Infantry, Co. B, CSA during the War Between the States. He was captured in 1864 during the Battle for Atlanta, and spent the last year of the war at Camp Morton, Indiana, where he was released at the end of the war.
He was a preacher at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Tallapoosa, Georgia as well as a mill worker.
He died of a heart attack while at work. He was described by a grand-daughter who remembered him as being a very sweet man.
