He was chief of the counter-intelligence service in the German military, and active in the German resistance against Nazi dictator Adolph Hitler. He played a major role in the bomb plot to kill Hitler in July 1944, for which he was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Flossenburg Concentration Camp, where he was executed for treason just before the end of the war.
