World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. A 1935 Naval Academy graduate, he is considered one of the greatest Navy submarine commanders of all time. During World War II he was skipper of the USS Barb (SS 220) in the Pacific Theater. From December 1944 to February 1945, he and his crew sank more than 30 enemy ships and blew up a Japanese troop transport train onshore. The Barb survived an estimated 400 shells, bombs and depth charges without one crew member being injured or killed. Fluckey was also the first to devise a method for firing rockets from a submarine. For his actions as Commanding Officer, USS Barb, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in March 1945. He was also the recipient of four Navy Crosses. In August 1972, he retired from active duty as a Rear Admiral, US Navy. He died of Alzheimer's disease. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
