A 1823 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, when the Civil War started he was serving a Colonel and Assistant Quartermaster General in the Regular Army. He was then appointed as Chief Quartermaster of the Philadelphia Depot, which was major railroad hub and transfer station for thousands of Union soldiers who were traveling to Washington and the war. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers and Major General, US Volunteers for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". (bio by: Russ Dodge)
