He served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. A decorated hero, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (2 awards), the Silver Star (2 awards), the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was commissioned in June 1914. In 1933 he graduated from the Command and General Staff School (an Army school for Battalion and Brigade commands). During World War II he commanded the XXI Corp under General Alexander M. Patch, and in February 1945 he played a decisive role in the collapse of the Colmar Pocket. His career is remarkable for having commanded five Corps of the United States Army and for two days in December of 1950 he was the acting commander of the United States Eighth Army. He retired in April 1952 after nearly 38 years of service. Following his retirement he served briefly as the Athletic Director at Montana State University. (bio by: Tom Todd)
