At the age of 19 he left home and homesteaded a farm in Lane county, Kansas and lived there 5 years. After proving upon his claim he returned to Harrison county and married. He began farming rented land in Grant township and shortly afterwards bought a farm in Jefferson Township about 1-1/2 miles south of Brooklyn. He raised a family there for 14 years, sold that farm and bought 160 acres in Trail Creek Township.
