Son of William Henry & Rachel Elizabeth Cates Burks. John Oscar married Viola Haristeen Bartlett. They married on 18 Dec 1890, Clayton Co, GA. They reared the following children. Cleophas C., Elvie Irene, Martin Orestus, Myrtice, Lethia, Hilda Mae, Odell Sarah, and John David Burks.
During his life he was a farmer, a machinist at a cotton gin, and worked as a mechanic on the train called "Dummy" which went into service in 1901 and ran for 30 years.

Funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from Forrest Grove Chdurch. Rev Charles Hett(?) will officiate. Interment, Forrest Grove Cemetery. Howard L Carmichael.
