The funeral of Mrs. Wm. Luken, mention of whose death was made in our last issue, occurred at San Pierre last Friday morning and was largely attended.
Mrs. Elizabeth Luken was 55 years, 10 months and 22 days of age, having been born July 25, 1852, at Lippo Detmold, Germany. She came to this country with her oldest sister when about 20 years of age, in the year 1872, landing in the city of Baltimore. There she formed the acquaintance of Wm. Luken, to whom she she was married in 1877. In 1880 they came to San Pierre, Indiana, where they engaged in the general merchandise business which they carried on for 14 years with good success, for which Mrs. Luken was entitled to a good share of credit owing to her enterprise and willingness to lend a helping hand about the store as well as about the house when and wherever needed.
After disposing of their business at San Pierre they moved to North Judson where Mr. Luken engaged in the banking business and where they lived ever since. About four years ago her health began to fail her and after trying everything that doctors and medical science could do for her she concluded to try another climate and accordingly went to Colorado in the hope of finding some relief. She remained there for 16 months after which she returned to her home and loved ones, apparently well and in good spirits. But this seemed to be only for a brief duration for in a short time her illness came back to her and for the last five or six months she suffered intense pain. Two months ago she was taken to the Lakeside hospital in Chicago for treatment and here death resulted on Tuesday evening of last week, relieving the pain and suffering that she had endured so long and with such patience.
She leaves to mourn her untimely departure a husband and four children -- two boys and two girls -- Charlotte Margaretha Selmer, Adolph, Lillian and Leroy, also three brothers and three sisters, one in Germany, one in Baltimore, one brother in Cincinnati and two brothers and one sister in Chicago.
One of the last things she said was "Heute abend noch gehe ich ___? ," which means in English "Tonight I'm going away."
The funeral was held at San Pierre Friday morning at 10:30 in charge of the German Lutheran minister of that place. Part of the Lutheran choir of this city assisted with the singing at the services. Interment was in the San Pierre cemetery.
