The Alphabet Family by Dale Hatch

Louisa Maria Hatch was born in Manti, Utah as the third daughter of Jeremiah Hatch and Louisa Poole Alexander. Two years after the death of her mother, this attractive blonde-haired, blue-eyed young lady of 15 years married Bartholomew Malan in October of 1871 in Ogden. His family were converted by the Mormon Missionaries in Italy and Immigrated to the Salt Lake Valley in 1855.
The Story is told that when Louisa Maria was pregnant with their first child that the doctor diagnosed her to be full of cancer and that she would not be able to bear any more children but would probably die instead. She went home and asked her husband to give her a priesthood blessing. Because of their great faith she not only gave birth to this child but for the next 25 years gave birth to fifteen more children as well. She lived a full life and reached the age of 70 years.
"Loui and Tim", as they called each other, prayed together and taught their children together and tried to build a good home environment were love, faith, and hope could exist so their children would develop sound characters and choose righteousness. Their large family became known as the "Alphabet Family" because the children were given successively ordered alphabetic names as listed.
Louisa Maria Hatch Malan was raised by parents of early colonial stock and one of her enduring beliefs was this: "The power to translate life into beauty, truth, sincerity, and nobleness is our rightful heritage. We are all God's children. Broaden your understanding daily." This was evidenced by her life's work. Being of gracious disposition and understanding nature, she was a gracious wife and mother; a teacher; a genealogical and temple worker; was gentle, kind, and affectionate; and doing good all her days. Louisa was exemplary in chastity, truthful, loyal, industrious, and lover of home and family.
