Elected to represent Indiana's 7th District in the US House of Representatives, he served from 1949 to 1951. He was defeated in 1946, and 1950. A Democrat, he also served as the Secretary of the Indiana Democratic Party from 1959 to 1966, Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Indiana in 1964, and as a Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana from 1966 to 1986.
