U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1855, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and proceeded to practice law in Hyde Park, Vermont, in 1859. He was a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives in 1858, prosecuting attorney of Lamoille County, (1861-62) and a member of the council of censors in 1869. He served in the Vermont State Senate (1872-73), again as a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives in 1874 and as a judge of the Supreme Court of Vermont, (1874-90). In 1891, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-second Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1901. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was a trustee of the University of Vermont, until his death at age 78. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
