He was a relief pitcher for thirteen seasons (1991 to 2001, 2003 to 2004) with the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres. He was named three times to the National League All Star Team (1993, 1994 and 1997). His most successful season was in 1998, when he recorded 51 saves and led the National League in appearances with 81.
