Birth: Jan. 10, 1864
Polo
Ogle County
Illinois, USA
Death: Dec. 28, 1942
Covina
Los Angeles County
California, USA

At the age of 4 months, Katie traveled across the country in a wagon train from Polo, Illinois, to Stockton, California. Her father, Peter, was an itinerant Bretheren preacher. Remaining there a little over a year, they boarded a ship sailing south to the Isthmus of Panama (or around the Horn), to return to Ephrata, Pennsylvania. They visited with family for a few months and moved to Kingston, Missouri, where they lived for six years. They then moved to Myrtle Point, Oregon, where they lived for twelve years. They then traveled south on a ship to San Francisco, then inland to Lathrop, California, to visit her sister, Anna. From there they traveled by horse and wagon to Lemon (Walnut), California. While in Oregon, Katie married Smith Lewellen in 1882 at the age of 18. She had two daughters by Lewellen who died in 1886. Her daughter, Eva, died in infancy and was buried beside her father, Smith Lewellen, in the old Spadra cemetery. Later their bodies were removed to the Pomona Cemetery. Widowed for 2 1/2 years and with little Elsie to care for, she married Perry Bashore in 1889. They had four children. Katie was a very religious person in the Brethren Church. She was a meticulous woman, especially in caring for her large two story home on Rowland Avenue in Covina. She was devoted to her church work and to reading her bible. For religious reasons she did not wish to be photographed. A candid photograph was taken of her at granddaughter's wedding--the only photograph of her during her life. Katie was not upset and kept the photo on a table near the kitchen. She had shy and mild-mannered ways.
