Irish nationalist revolutionary. Teacher, writer and emotional orator. Signatory to the Proclamation of the Republic. Military Commander-in-Chief during the Easter 1916 rising; gave the unconditional surrender after one week. One of fourteen leaders of the uprising to be court-marshalled and executed by firing squad in Kilmainham Jail (a further 75 were condemned but reprieved).
