Served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 58th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on January 12, 1865 for "long, faithful and most valuable services, and for able management of pontoon train". On March 2, 1865 he received the brevet of Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He remained in the Regular Army after the war, eventually reaching the rank of Colonel. He was the first cousin of Union Major General Don Carlos Buell.
