Werner Lee Schrank, Jr. 86, died Oct. 12, 2004, in the Olin Teague Veterans Hospital in Temple. Funeral services were held Oct. 16 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Aleman with Pastor Donald Olson Jr. officiating. Burial was in St. Paul's Cemetery.
Mr. Schrank was born in the Aleman Community on June 25, 1918, the son of Werner Lee Schrank Sr. and the former Antonia Schrank. He was baptized July 14, 1918, by Pastor F. Behrmann. He was confirmed on April 10, 1932, by Pastor E.F. Moerbe.
His mother preceded him in death in 1921, when Werner was only three. In 1923, when Werner was five, his dad married the former Ola Windham from the Jonesboro area. From this union Werner gained a brother, O. B. Schrank, who would later be killed in action in the Korean Conflict in 1951, and a sister, Ann Schrank, who survives him today with her husband, Paul Hollingsworth, in Clifton. Other survivors include his six children, Priscilla Lucas and husband, Wilford, of McAllen; Peggy Hill and husband, Bobby, of Robinson; Mona Prichard and husband, Tommy, of Aleman; Marla Pack and husband, Rickie, of Eastland; Stanley Schrank of Arnett; and Lee Ellen Schrank of Robinson. Also, there are seven surviving grandchildren: Jason and Toby Lucas; Heidi and Zachary Zerkle; Mitzi, Trevor, and Trent Pack; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Zerkle, Nate Hall and Jaleigh Hall.
Like his father, who preceded him in death in 1968, Werner was a war veteran, serving in WWII from 1942-1945 in Europe, where he was a corporal in the US Army. He received the Bronze Star for bravery and the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. Amazingly, the same shrapnel that wounded Mr. Schrank killed his brother-in-law, Jack Craigo. Because of his ability to speak German, Werner was able to read and translate intercepted German messages for the Allied Forces. In 1943, he was married to Ernestine Adams of the Levita Community. She was baptized and confirmed in his church, and they attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church together faithfully until her death in 1999.
Mr. Schrank was a man with clear-cut philosophies. He never owned a credit card, always paid his debts, sent six children to college on a farmer's and hatchery-man's pay, and loved music and dominoes. He had a quick wit and labeled each family member with a nickname. Pallbearers were Keith and Bryan Hollingsworth, Jason and Toby Lucas, Zachary Zerkle, Trevor and Trent Pack, Nicholas Zerkle and Nate Hall
Memorials can be made to the cemetery fund of St. Paul's, Aleman, or the general fund of St. Paul's Lutheran Church
