Sergeant with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry based in Edmonton, Alberta. Age 31. Originally from Laval, QC he had over 10 years service.

He was one of three Canadian soldiers killed when their open-top unarmoured all-terrain M-Gator vehicle struck an improvised explosive device on the main road, approximately 40 km west of Kandahar City. The incident occurred while the soldiers were conducting resupply operations between checkpoints near a forward-operating base at Sperwan Ghar in the Panjwaii district.

Sixty Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have died since Canada first sent troops to Afghanistan in 2002.

Sgt Karigiannis was on his third overseas deployment, having previously served in the former Yugoslavia. He had been a member of the elite Canadian Forces Skyhawks parachutist team. Also, he was a qualified pilot.

Sgt Karigiannis survived by his mother Niki, his brothers Peter and Spiro, his sisters-in-law Nancy and Panagiota and his niece Anastasia. He will always be remembered for his strong convictions and devotion to excellence.
