Acclaimed Actress. Norma Shearer was born in a well to do family that lost everything in the 1910s. At the age of 14 young Norma won a beauty contest and soon after, her mother took her to New York in hopes that Norma's beauty would earn some money for the family. She found work as a model and began appearing in small film roles. In 1923 a talent scout named Irving Thalberg, who would later become her husband, tracked her down after seeing her in a 1920 film and signed her to a screen contract at MGM. He soon rose to a position of power and he and Norma wed in 1927. She began to receive substantial roles and got to choose the scripts and co-stars she wanted. She won an Academy award for her performance in the 1930 film "The Divorcee". Her other memorable films include "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" (1934), "Marie Antoinette" (1938) and "The Women" (1939). Her husband died in 1936 after which she starred in a series of flops mixed in with some successful films, "The Women" which co-starred Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell and Joan Fontaine being the most notable. Norma retired from films in the early 1940's and later married a ski instructor named Martin Arrouge who was twenty years younger.
