US Congressman. Elected to represent Tennessee's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1973 to 1983. He was succeeded in Congress by Al Gore. A Republican, he also ran as a Candidate for United States Senator from Tennessee in 1982, and served as NATO's Assistant Secretary-General. He died from complications from a malignant brain tumor.
