Joseph Burton Sumner married Susannah Ferguson. They had eleven children together (7 boys, 4 girls). He is the founder of Sumner, Tallahatchie, MS. He fought in the Civil War as a Confederate solder in Co A 22nd AL Vol Inf. He was wounded during the operations before Murfreesboro, TN the evening of Dec. 31, 1862 having the muscle in his right arm shot off.

He was the founder of Sumner, MS. He served as the first postmaster and was elected as the first mayor when the city was established in 1900.
