Stephen was the son of Joseph Carroll and Edith Hollingsworth. He was born in Sampson Co., NC. In 1835, his parents sold their family land in NC and moved to Thomas County, GA. Stephen married Parizade Dekle in 1839. In 1863, Stephen moved to Brooks Co., GA. After the war, Stephen decided to move to Texas. In the fall of 1873 after the crops were sold, he with his wife and four young children started their journey to Texas. Accompanying Stephen were two of his grown sons, James Caswell, his family and mother-law, and Stephen Thomas and his family. They traveled by train from Georgia to New Orleans, La. From there they traveled by steamboat to Galveston, Tx. They then rode the train from Galveston to Waco, Tx.
The three men each rented a farm on a prairie located on the west side of the Brazos River. There they made crops in 1874 and 1875. Stephen did not like living in this area. After the crops were up and growing, he and son James Caswell rode horseback to East Texas looking for a better place to live. He tentatively bought a farm in Anderson County. After the crops were sold in 1875, Stephen and his sons James Caswell, Stephen Thomas and George Marion moved by wagons and teams to Anderson County, Texas, where Stephen remained the rest of his life. He is buried in the Crawford Cemetery, located across the road from his original property. His wife Parizade is buried at his side.
