Baron Guy de Rothschild was born Edouard Alphonse Paul Guy de Rothschild in Paris, France and became head of the French arm of the House of Rothschild, fianciers to Europe. In 1939, at the beginning of World War II, he joined the 3rd Light Mechanised Division; fiercely attacked by the Germans, only three of 26 members survived and he was one of them. Later after the 1944 Normandy invasion he fought with the Resistance; he was awarded the Croix de Guerre. After the war, he revived the French arm of the House of Rothschild banking by reclaiming it from the pro-Nazi Vichy regime that had seized it and then headed de Rothschild Freres Bank from 1967 to 1979. In 1981 it was again siezed, this time by President Mitterrand's government, and later resurrected as Rothschild & Cie Bank by the Baron's son. He had a passion for thoroughbred horses and headed the Thoroughbred Breeders Union from 1975 to 1982 and his horses won some of the most prestigious prizes in France. He also founded and presided over the Fonds Social Juif Unifié (United Jewish Welfare Fund), the primary Jewish philanthropic agency in France, from 1950 to 1982. (bio by: Fred Beisser)
