Joy Ruesch Jordan, died Friday, June 18, 2004 in St. George, Utah. Born on July 6, 1930 in Hurricane, Utah to Matilda “Mattie” Woodbury and William Ruesch, Jr., her early life was spent on the Arizona Strip at a ranch known as Antelope. Her schooling was spent mostly in St. George, attending second and third grade in Hurricane. Her college education included one year at Dixie Junior College, one year at USAC (USU), one year at BYU, and various classes at BAC (SUU), Northern Arizona University, and correspondence until she graduated with a BS degree from BYU with her oldest daughter in 1976. Mohave Community College in Fredonia provided her with opportunities to continue growing.

When Joy was studying at BYU in 1950, she met the love of her life, John Benny Jordan (Fredonia High School Coach for many years -- Benny was raised in the Protestant faith -- Methodist or Baptist, I think he told me. Then his sister, who converted to Mormonism, talked him into attending BYU, where he met Joy), and they were married July 21, 1951 in St. George, Utah, (Joy's residence), when she was 21 and Benny was 25, and had been residing in Provo, Utah. They were sealed in the St. George Temple on June 27, 1952, and were married for almost 53 years. Their home was blessed with a family of six: Vicki (David) Allen of Fillmore, Utah, Shawna Johnston Johnston (Don) Cox of Kanab, Tammy (Cary) Glade of San Antonio, Texas, Mitchell (Karen) Jordan of Mesa, Nickolas (Sol) Jordan of Hurricane, and Holly (Robert) Olmstead of Gilbert, AZ. Their family has been enriched with 37 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also survived by brother David W. Ruesch and sister Zona R. Wright, both of Hurricane; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Spike Willis Johnston, son-in-law Steve Dean Johnston, brother Rondo W. Ruesch, and sister Rosel R. Seastrand.

Joy loved “blooming where she was planted.” She was always active in both church and civic functions. She served in the MIA for 32 years, in the Primary, Relief Society, Choir, Sunday School, Family History Program, and as a Visiting Teacher for 50 years. She and her beloved companion went on a one-year mission to the Independence, Missouri Mission in 1988-89.

Joy wanted to make the world better wherever she lived. She served in the 4-H program in St. Anthony, Idaho and also in Fredonia, helped with the Northern Arizona Fair in Fredonia, was co-chair of Fredonia’s Centennial Celebration of 1985, served 11 years on the Fredonia Town Council and two years as the Fredonia Mayor. She was also a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, the Eagle’s Forum and an ATV club. She was a substitute teacher in the Fredonia schools for many years.

Joy and Benny spent ten years working and managing Deer Springs Ranch. She never lost her desire for learning, her ability for making and keeping friends, or her love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Visitation was held Monday evening, June 21, 2004, and funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at the Fredonia LDS Chapel. Burial was in the Fredonia Cemetery under the direction of Mosdell Mortuary.
