C. L. Arnold, Prominent T.C. Resident Dies
Clayton L. Arnold. 74, of 623 Washington street and a Traverse City business and civic leader for many years, died of a heart attack Monday afternoon while burning
brush on his farm near Williamsburg.
Mr. Arnold was born April 10, 1887 on the Bates Valley Farm
cleared from the forest by his parents, Jared and Amelia Arnold, in 1865. He died on his seventy-fourth birthday anniversary.
After spending his boyhood in the Bates Valley Farm area, he attended and graduated from Needham Business College, becoming manager of Potato Growers and Shippers Co. He then kept books for the Traverse City Refrigerator
and Fireless Cooker Manufacturing Co. and for a year,
represented the firm in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Arnold then became a commercial salesman nnd bought an
interest in the East Jordan Planing Mill. At East Jordan he met and married Jennie Auburna Waterman, on June 20, 1917.
In 1931 he returned to the Bates Valley Farm for four years, then was a salesman for W. A. Sheaffer Pen Co. for nine years, becoming the company's top salesman in the
United States.
In February of 1931 Mr. and Mrs. Arnold opened the Arnold Office Supply Company, operating the firm until a year ago.
Along with his business career. Mr. Arnold loved the land, developing cherry, alfalfa, and pine tree acreages in addition to the home farm.
He had a keen interest in public and political affairs. He was a member of the Chicago Ethical Society, a charter member of the Traverse City Unitarian Fellowship, and a member of the Elks Lodge.
Mr. Arnold was on the state committee for the American Association for the United Nation, and was vice-president of the Grand Traverse Historical Society.
Surviving are the widow; four daughters. Mrs. Amelia Meach of Traverse City, Mrs. Zoltan (Margaret) Csete of Detroit, Mrs. Edward (Auburna) Bonnell Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Clarence (Harriett) Niemeyer of San Bernardino, Calif.: one son, Clayton Waterman Arnold of Flint: 19 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will he held at Hibbard funeral chapel in Traverse City at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dr. Tracy Pullman of Detroit Unitarian church officiating. Burial will be in Circle Hill cemetery, east of Williamsburg.
