| Birth: | Mar. 1, 1810 | | Death: | Oct. 17, 1849 | Legendary Composer. Born in Zelazowa Wola, central Poland to French emigre Nicolas Chopin and his cultured Polish wife Tekla Krzyzanowska. According to Chopin and his family, his date of birth was March 1, but his birth certificate said February 22. Chopin was a prodigy, displaying a genius for music at a very early age. By the age of 7 he had already composed two polonaises. He began professional music lessons in 1816, but by 1822 his skills had far eclipsed those of his instructor, violinist Wojciech Zywny. His scholarship continued at the Warsaw Conservatory under the tutelage of pianist Wilhelm Wurfel. He left Poland in 1831 and settled in Paris, where he became immensely popular in the salons of the elite and was a friend of composer Franz Liszt. He toured Europe extensively both alone and with Liszt. In 1836 Chopin was introduced to free-thinking, trouser-wearing authoress George Sand (Aurore Dudevant), and the unlikely pair was together for 10 years, Chopin's most prolific and creative period. Composing almost exclusively for piano, Chopin created over 225 pieces, including 58 mazurkas, 26 preludes, 27 etudes, 21 nocturnes, 21 waltzes, 17 polonaises, and 2 piano concertos. He died in Paris at the age of 39, and as per his request, Mozart's "Requiem" was performed at his funeral at the Church of the Madeleine. (bio by: VampireRed)
