| Birth: | Jul. 7, 1952 | | Death: | Dec. 18, 2000 Auckland, New Zealand | Race car driver. Affectionately known as "Foxy" to some within the racing community, he was an 8-start veteran of the Indianapolis 500. His best finish, 7th place, came in his rookie year in 1987. He also had a Top Ten finish at 8th in 1991. His racing career ended following a terrible crash on the first lap of the 1995 Indianapolis 500, which left him with severe head injuries. Following a marvelous recovery, he worked tirelessly on behalf of head-injury victims with his "Friends of the Fox" organization and support group. He personally led head-injury victims on tours of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway garage area each May and also led similar groups to other racetracks around the country. He was a source of encouragement to actor Christopher Reeve in his recovery from a severe injury to his cervical spine. Fox was killed in a traffic accident in New Zealand, where he was visiting friends and attending races. (bio by: Warrick L. Barrett)
