Richard B. Baxter was a prominent Presbyterian businessman in Sparta. He was known for his "beautiful" Jersey bulls, his imported English shotguns, and his generosity with game killed on his hunting trips. Finally,he was chosen by David Dickson as one of three trusted men who witnessed the signing of Dickson's will. See page 83, Woman of Color,Daughter of Privilege by Kent Anderson Leslie, University of Georgia Press, 1995. Born in Athens, Ga., Nov. 27, 1840, the son of Thomas W. and Mary (Wiley) Baxter. Married Aug. 9 to Miss Kate, daughter of Tinsley W. Rucker.
