Major League baseball Player. One of the premier fielding 3rd baseman during his tenure in the Major Leagues, Clete Boyer joined the Yankees from the Kansas City Athletics in a June 1954 trade. Prone to the spectacular play in the field, Hall Of Fame 3rd baseman Brooks Robinson once said of him, "I never saw anyone make more spectacular plays than Cletis." Never much of a hitter, the Cassville, Missouri native played in 5 World Series with the Yankees, winning two. A member of the famous 1961 team that featured the M&M Boys, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, his best year at the plate was 1962, when he batted .272 with 18 homers and 68 RBI. Traded to the Braves on November 29, 1966 for Bill Robinson and Chi-Chi Olivo. Released on June 2, 1971, he later coached for several teams, including the Yankees, where he was a favorite of Billy Martin. The brother of former Major Leaguers Ken and Cloyd Boyer, he died from complications from a massive stroke on June 4, 2007, exactly 50 years to the date that he was traded to the Yankees.
