Auto Racing Executive. Following the retirement of his father, Nascar founder Bill France Sr. in 1972, he served as President and CEO until 2000. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (Nascar), is the largest sanctioning body of motorsports in the United States. France Jr. was instrumental in making NASCAR the sport is today, getting its first big sponsor RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. and building the Daytona International Speedway, Flordia. As a rule-maker, promoter, ambassador and salesman, he set the standard by which all other forms of motorsports are measured. He made NASCAR a national sport in popularity and on television with revenues in access of $2.4 billion annually from broadcasts. In 2001, he was inducted into the Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame and into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2004. He died of cancer.
