College Basketball Coach. He was the head basketball coach at the Naval Academy for over two decades. As head coach of the men's program from 1966 to 1976, he compiled a record of 94 wins and 130 losses. In 1977 he resigned as head coach of the men's team to serve as the head coach of the women's basketball program. He led the lady Midshipmen to a record of 179 wins against 119 losses over 12 seasons. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1957, where he earned six letters in baseball and basketball as a student athlete. He led the basketball team in scoring in both his sophomore and senior years, earning an appearance in the East-West All-Star Game during his senior year. In 1962 he returned to Navy as an assistant coach after serving five years in the United States Marine Corps. From 1979 to 2001 he served as assistant athletic director in charge of admissions before being promoted to the position of senior associate athletic director for admissions, academics and compliance. On Jan. 7, 2005, the basketball court at Alumni Hall was renamed "Dave Smalley Court" in honor of his numerous contributions to the Navy basketball program. In May 2007, he was officially inducted into the Maryland State Sports Hall of Fame. He died from complications of cancer at the age of 72. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
