During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army in the 5th Texas Cavalry regiment, rising to the rank of Major, and was wounded in action twice. He was elected as a Democrat to represent first Texas's 10th Congressional District, then the 9th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1885 to 1899. From Who's Who in the World, 1912Joseph Draper Sayers was born Sept. 23, 1841 at Grenada, Miss., son of David and Mary (Peete) Sayers, immigrated to Bastrop Co. Texas in Dec. 1851; was educated at Bastrop Military Institute; was a lawyer by profession. -
