Clara V. Carlson
(March 18, 1929-April 21, 2017)

Clara Virginia (Workman) Carlson, age 88, passed away April 21, 2017 at Bethany Good Samaritan Home in Brainerd of natural causes. Clara was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 18, 1929 to Raymond and Clara (Walton) Workman. Shortly thereafter the family moved to a farm in Pillager where Clara grew up; she graduated from Pillager High School in 1946. She went on to study accounting at Brainerd Junior (Central Lakes) College and graduated in 1948. Clara used her skills at Consolidated Telephone Company, Brainerd National Bank and at her most rewarding position at Central Lakes College where she made long-lasting friendships with colleagues and student workers. She and college instructor/husband Kent worked at the college together for 20+ years.

Outside of the workplace, Clara enjoyed flower gardening, playing Bridge and doing crosswords, reading, attending community events, and most of all spending time with her two granddaughters from whom she learned about more dance styles and attended dance and piano recitals and athletic events and played mini-golf and rode rides and on it goes; she truly gave the most precious gift, that of time. Clara was an example of strength and an always alert mind, loyalty and kindness, caring and generosity.

Clara is survived by her husband Kent; daughters Teresa (Ralph) Petersen of Richmond, and Lori (Clair) Olson of Elk River; granddaughters Nicole Olson of Rochester and Amanda Petersen of Minneapolis; sisters Mona Foster of Traverse City, MI, and Marilyn Tidrick of Northfield.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Clara (Walton) Workman, and her sister Joy Freeman.

A visitation will be held at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 from 5:00-7:00pm. A memorial service will take place at 11:00am on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Lord of Life Church in Baxter.

Special thanks to the staff at Bethany Good Samaritan for their compassionate care and to the river neighbors for their caring and kindness.
