Co-founder of Field, Palmer, Leiter & Co., which became Marshall Field & Company, a large department store in Chicago. Invested in real estate in the Chicago area. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Chicago Relief and Aid Society helping with the rebuilding of the city after the fire of 1871. He was president of the Commercial Club of Chicago, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Chicago Historical Society. He and his son, Joseph, purchased land in Franklin County, Illinois, and founded Zeigler Coal Company.
