Richard Morgan served as a census enumerator for Campbell County, Virginia, in 1830, and worked as a tobacco inspector as a young man. He inherited "Shady Grove" plantation near the modern town of Gladys from his father Terrell Morgan in 1840. But, he sold the home (now a state historic site) to the Perrow family during the Civil War to move into a more modest dwelling nearby, formerly owned by the Haythe family. He served as a Confederate Commissar in the last year of the war. In his last years, he donated land for the establishment of nearby Mount Kedron Baptist Church, and for a public school. When he died, the Perrows allowed him to be buried on the grounds of his former plantation.
