She was the daughter of Samuel James Robertson and Harriette Jane Adams. She married Robert Wellington Shields on December 8, 1905 in Hunt County, Texas and they had the following children; Syble, Audie, Iran, and John. Her siblings were; Joseph D., Benjamin Franklin (Frank), and John.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tommie Shields, 74, were held Sunday afternoon, February 12, 1961 at the Briggs Baptist Church with Rev. George Kouri and Minister Jenkins officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Edgar (Syble) Gillum and Mrs. Audie Mae (Lloyd) Flowers of Georgetown; and two sons, Scott Shields and Faye Shields of Briggs.
Burial was in the Mill Creek Cemetery.
