C. J. STUDENT DIED IN CRASH
16-year-old was wearing seat belt at time of crash
Carl Junction students are drawing support from each other and their parents, says a school official, in the wake of the Saturday death of a 16-year-old CJHS student.
Brooke A. Hough died in a one-car crash three miles northwest of Joplin, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Hough was traveling west on Fountain Road at about 1:20 p.m. when she lost control of her vehicle, which then skidded off the right side of the road and struck a tree, according to the patrol. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Coroner Jerry Neil.
"It is a tragic day in Carl Junction," said, Phil Cook, superintendent of the Carl Junction School District, where Hough was a student. "It's just awful."
Cook said he knew both Hough and her family.
"She was very popular", Cook said. "Everybody liked her."
Regular classes at CJHS have already been dismissed for the year, while the school's summer session has not yet begun.
Still, Cook said school officials will provide students with whatever assistance they can.
"We are going to give the kids anything they need," Cook said.
Accidents have claimed the lives of several of the district's students of the past several years.
It was less than a year ago the Isaac Pinkerton, 17, another CJHS student was killed in a one-car accident. Pinkerton was traveling south on Peace Church Road, four miles south of Carl Junction on June 4, 2006, when his vehicle veered of the right side of the road, struck a tree and overturned several times. Pinkerton was thrown from the vehicle. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
David "Nick" N. Ross, another CJHS student, died in a one-car accident near Lebanon, MO., in November 2004.
Justin R. Hubbard, 12, died in May 2003 after his bicycle was hit by a car on the Joplin Street Bridge over Center Creek, south of Carl Junction.
"I don't know why it is Carl Junction that has had such bad luck," Cook said.
"We have dealt with tragedies before, and we are sick of them," Cook said.
