US Senator, US Congressman. He served in the United States Senate from the state of Iowa from January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1981. He also served in the United States House of Representatives from the 2nd District of Iowa from January 3, 1965 to January 3, 1975. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1958. After leaving the Marines, he went back to Harvard and earned his law degree in 1962. He started a law practice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa a year later and in 1964, decided to run, as a Democrat,for the United States House of Representatives. He was successful in the general election in November of that year and served in the House for five terms before deciding to seek a seat in the United States Senate in 1974. During his House tenure, he was one of 15 members of the House that voted against making it a federal crime to burn the American flag in 1967. He was successful in his Senate campaign that year and went on to serve one term before losing his re-election bid to Republican Charles Grassley in 1980. After leaving the Senate, he joined a Washington law firm and practiced law until December of 2009. His son, Chet Culver, served as Governor of Iowa from 2007 to 2011.
