Lawyer, Superintendent of Buffalo Schools. The first NYS Superintendent of Public Instruction. Initiated free public education in New York State. He was instrumental in the establishment of state colleges at Oswego, Cortland, Brockport, Potsdam, Geneseo, Fredonia, and Buffalo, and in the establishment of Cornell University. In 1847 he was the editor of the "Western Temperance Standard" in Buffalo, NY.
