James Floyd masters was born to William M. and Temperance Cassell Masters on December 13, 1843. He was one of six children.

He married Zelie Ann Cassell on July 4, 1875. He and Zelie had 10 children. James was a farmer and he was one of the most proficient men in his area. He grew cotton on his land and Zelie made cloth from this and made their clothes. He grew everyting that his family needed except for coffee, sugar and flour, and he traded the foods that he had for these. He had over 200 apple trees according to his daughter, Zelie Elmina Masters Lister.
